Arizona 2005 - Day 11 - Phoenix - South Mountain

Mormon / National / Telegraph pass / Desert Classic Mountain bike trail ride

Night ride - (Lost Dog Wash / Quartz Trail / Ring Tail)

Had breakfast at Hotel and then drove on down to South Mountain - the GPS maps I had bought previously proved invaluable in navigating to the park via all the different freeways. It was a warm sunny day, but the air quality was quite bad.

Parked up at the Pima Canyon car park, and then rode up the dirt road from the car park, eventually joined the Mormon Loop Trail.

Riding up National Trail

Rode up the national trail , which was quite challenging at times. The worst thing about riding in this area was the air quality which was quite bad.

National Trail to BV

I carried on along the national trail to Buena Vista Lookout , and then along the national trail to the Telegraph pass trail. This last section of the national trail and telegraph pass trail pretty much sucked for me as my technical skills were not up to the non-stop drop offs, so a fair amount of hike-a-bike at the bottom of Telegraph pass, I stopped to look at some rock art panels.

Rock Art

I Joined onto the desert classic trail which was a fairly mediocre double track trail, with some fun drops in and out of the wash's, but other wise quite boring, that is until I spotted a a jogger on some skinny singletrack snaking off the desert classic towards the mountain slopes.

Fun ups and downs

I headed off on this singletrack and had a great time on these trails scooting up and down the wash's and riding up and down rocky saddles, until I eventually joined back onto the desert classic trail and headed back to the SUV

In between rocks

I then headed back to the Hotel and then eat some food and watched some TV, then once it had got dark I headed over to Steve's house, where I met him for a night ride. When Ii got to Steve's house I found that my new light had arrived from Beyond bikes.

We then rode out from Steve's house and up to the Lost Dog Wash via some urban trails. Steve then took me up the Quartz Trail, the trail was pretty tough as it was straight up a wash full of smallish loose rocks, but was very good fun and eventually the wash narrowed right up to a rocky shute with large saguaro cactus all over the place. This trail at night really put the boring trails at home to shame.

We then rode back down the trail and rejoined the Lost dog wash trail to head up into the Mcdowell mountain preserve. Where we rode around on the Ring Tail trail, which was very good at night. But Steve's bike started to have mechanical issues with one of his main pivot point catching on his chainrings. So we cut the ride short and and rode pack on the side walks back to his house, just as well really as my head light ran out just before we got out of the park. Saw my first herd of javelina pigs on the way out of the park.

We cycled back to Steve's and then I drove back to my Hotel and had a swim and hot tub before hitting the sack
