Day 4 : Drive from Canmore to Golden (Canyon Creek Mountain bike ride)

We woke to find it was raining and over overcast outside you couldn't see the mountains today. We ate breakfast at the hotel again. Then packed up our gear packed it in the SUV and then checked out. The Hotel gave us a discount for the noisy air vent, although it was quite an expensive Hotel we'd probably stay here again. We headed into Canmore and bought some groceries and lunch from a super market and also bought an umbrella as it was raining even harder now.We were heading to Golden today, and we decided to stop at Lake Louise and Emerald lake along the way.

As we headed west the rain started to stop highway 1 was very scenic, and was not that busy. As it had stopped raining by the time we got to Lake Louise we pulled off and went up to the lake.

We walked up to the lake in front of the hotel, there were hundreds of tourists milling around , and you could see loads of people walking along the lake side trail, so we decided to rent a canoe and go for a paddle on the lake the canoe rental was not cheap at $55 but was worth it. We paddled right to the end of the lake and back. Here's a load of pictures we took while out on the lake.

We turned off the 1 and drove uptime Emerald lake, it was quite cold up at the lake and rained on and off while we were there. We walked to peaceful lake, and Clare got a hot drink from the Emerald Lake Resort.
On the way back to the 1 we stopped off at the Natural Bridge where the Kicking Horse river flowed underneath a rock arch.
We then carried on driving west to Golden as we were coming down the long hill into Golden we saw a herd of Big Horn sheep at the road side. In Golden we went to Summit Cycles where we were able to get some trail maps. Then we headed up to the Kicking Horse Resort, on the way we got stuck at a level crossing while a very long train went past. Once the train had gone past we drove up to the Highland lodge which I had pre-booked before we came out on Holiday. We then checked in to the lodge.

Heres a few pictures I took of the room we had, the room we had was on the ground floor towards the back of the hotel and has a queen bed and a single bed. We had no views of anything other than some dirt and some pines out of the windows. The Lodge itself was made of lodge pole pine logs.

I drove from the kicking horse resort back down the mountain and along the Talus Creek road, where I parked at the Upper Network Access Point. The ride started by heading up a dirt road as can been seen in the above video clip.

Video Canyon Creek double track (4 MB)

The trail eventually started to turn into double track as the road became overgrown, I couldn't stop to take pictures as there were a lot of mosquitoes around. The trail as quite wet in places.

Video trail turning to overgrown wet singletrack (22.5 MB)

The double track started to revert to singletrack, it was quite wet in places and the vegetation was thick around the trail. There were a few planks and log rides along the way but most were overgrown or broken, as can be seen in video above.

I managed to get bitten by mosquito's quite a few times while messing around taking pictures. Canyon Creek Mountain bike ride, Golden

After the initial section of trail by the canyon edge the trail cut back into the tress and headed down some very steep switch backs though the trees, before climbing back up to the canon edge again.

Not sure why it broke, but when I got home I sent it back to www.wiggle.co.uk and they replaced it with a new one no questions asked 8-). As My front mech had broken I revised my plans to head onto the moonraker trail, and just headed down the Klahowya trail. Canyon Creek Mountain bike ride, Golden

I rode past sander lake and then back along 2% road to the SUV, which was a nice easy spin on a dirt road. The ride had been a good one it would have been better without the bugs and if had been a bit dryer, but when we come back to Canada I'll make a point of coming back to golden and doing this trail again, and exploring the trails I didn't ride.

I then drove back to the lodge and used the Hot Tub out back , and then we had dinner at the Local Hero pub, the food was ok but very overpriced.
