Day 9: Drive from New Denver to Rossland (Wilson Creek Mountain bike ride)

Villa Dome Interior We woke to another sunny morning, and had breakfast, I decided that before we drove to Rossland I would ride the Wilson creek trail so I got my gear together. As can be seen in the picture to the right I carry a lot of stuff when on holiday. We then drove over to the trail head described by the chap at the Wild Rose. Which was 5.75 km up a dirt road from the main road. All my biking gear
The trail head was not marked in any way and we drove past it to start off before spotting a break in the trees with a ribbon on a tree. Clare dropped me off and I headed off down the trail. Wilson Creek Mountain bike Singletrack ride Wilson Creek Mountain bike Singletrack ride

The trail dropped down through the trees , it looked as if hardly anyone rode the trail on a regular basis as the moss on the trail was undisturbed. I started to call out regularly for bears as the trail had a wild feel to it.

Wilson Creek Mountain bike Singletrack ride Once I had dropped down to the trail, a well defined ribbon of singletrack was evident as the trail wound along the valley side, off to the left the trail dropped downwards towards a river you couldn't see at this point of the ride. At one point in the ride I came across a pile of bones by the trail. Wilson Creek Mountain bike Singletrack ride

The singletrack headed gradually down hill with some up hill sections as it went round drainage's, it was mostly clear of downed trees, someone had been busy with a chain saw on this trail.

There were a couple of solid well constructed bridges on this trail, but no elevated sections. Just good old school singletrack fun.

Wilson Creek Mountain bike Singletrack ride I really enjoyed the upper section of the wilson creek trail, asides from a couple of down 'd trees the trail was a blast. The trail looked as if hardly anyone rode it , which is odd as it was a great ride. Wilson Creek Mountain bike Singletrack ride

Eventually the singletrack broke out into a clearing, which I rode through and across the logging road we had driven up, there was a sign for Wilson creek trail. I headed across the trail and it headed down a couple of steep section of trails.

The lower wilson creek trail was cool, tight singletrack between lots of skinny trees, the trail didn't only go down, there were some ups as well as some level sections twisting between the trees.

At times there were so many trail junctions I had to choose which singletrack looked promising, and had to back track a couple of time when I ended up at logging roads. This section of the trail would have been good to do with a local who knew which trails to string together.

After one last fast section of singletrack I ended up at a camp ground where I connected onto the road to Rosebery

At Rosbery I crossed the road and connected onto the Galena trail and headed along it towards New Denver, passing the Wild Rose Restaurant on the way. WildRose resturant Galena trail

The ride back to new Denver was a nice easy spin along the old railway line of the Galena trail, at time it climbed slightly, there were good views of the lakes and mountains as it passed through small clearings.

I really enjoyed the Wilson creek trail which was just my type of trail, nice smooth twisty singletrack. All of it 100% rideable, apart from the few down 'd tree's. It was quite open most of the time so I didn't have to worry about running into bears as much as I had on some of the other trails we had ridden so far.

New Denver bike shop I arrived back in New Denver and packed my bike in the SUV which Clare has already packed, and then used the spa showers. We then checked out and were given $100 off the bill to make up for the burnt pan smell. We would definitely stay at Villa dome again, and the riding was good enough in New Denver to justify a return visit. I also rang up Adrenaline Adventures in Rossland to arrange 2 places on their shuttle for the following day. Villa Dome
We then drove along along the 31a to Kaslo, we stopped at the lake in Kaslo where it was very windy. We stopped at the tourist information at an old steam boot and picked up some brochures for the area. Map of drive from New Denver to Rossland

We then carried on driving the Nelson, where we stopped at fruit stand and bought some local fruit which was very ripe and tasty, we then stopped at a Safeway supermarket and bought some food from the deli. Then we drove through Nelson and headed on towards Rossland.

We drove on through Trail, I had originally booked us in to a Hotel here, and was glad I'd changed our mind as Trail was very industrial place with chimneys belching out smoke.

We stopped in Rossland and bought a trail map from the bike shop there, before stopping off at the visitors bureau to get more information.

We the drove on to the ski resort and arrived at the Slalmon creek resort just after 4pm ,but found the red property management office was closed, as our mobile wouldn't work, we had to drive to the Ramshead hotel and ask to use their phone so we could call the out of hours telephone number. Luckily we were able to get though and were given instructions on how to get the key to our condo.

The condo was fantastic it was the the most impressive place we had ever stayed in while on holiday before, and wasnt that expensive either. The pictures above are of the master bedroom, and its en suite bathroom which had steam shower.

The condo had a balcony with a large hot tub, a washer dryer which all our stinky washing went straight in, and another bathroom with a bathtub

It also had a gourmet kitchen , and another bedroom with a bed, and another bedroom with a sofa bed.

We drove into Rossland but couldn't find any restaurants open that Clare liked the look of so we bought some food from the supermarket and then cooked it back at our condo. We had a good nights sleep apart from when the Hot-Tub on the balcony kept on turning on by it's self.
