Day 1 - Flying from London to Phoenix

My flight to Phoenix was on a Saturday at 14:35 with British Airways who I fly with because they allow a bike as well as two items of luggage as part of the free baggage allowance, and the flights are direct too, which avoids the nightmare of having to change planes in America.

I got dropped off by wife at Heathrow airport 4 hours before the flight was due to depart. At check in I had a pleasant surprise when I was upgraded from premium economy to Business class

I then killed time in the airport departures lounge before catching the plane to Phoenix. Click to Enlarge

I was very lucky at the car rental office in that I got a very well specified Toyota 4Runner SUV, which was much better than the last very basic SUV I rented in Washington.

I then headed off to my Hotel the La Quinta Inn in Scottsdale, on the way I stopped off at Performance Bikes (Northsight Blvd) where I bought spare slime tubes, tyres, gloves, cleats, a bottle cage for extra water, power bars and a track pump. Then I went o a Walmart and bought 24 liters of bottled water, more powerbars, bananas , and a battery charger and batteries for my gps, before checking in to the Hotel where I rebuilt my bike, and got in touch with a contact from MTBR who I was going to ride the Black Canyon trail with on Sunday.
