Day 2 - Black Canyon Trail Mountain Bike ride

BCT (Black Canyon Mountain) Mountain Bike singletrack trail ride (Phoenix, Arizona)

I'd arranged to meet up with Wheezpuff via the MTBR forum at the Happy Valley shopping center

I managed to navigate my way to the meeting point, having to make various detours due to some of the freeways being shut for construction, and we loaded my bike up into his truck and drove north along the I17 to the Black Canyon trail head.

The BCT trail system is fairly new and I'd never ridden up there before.

As you can see in the pictures it was a very hot Sunny day, with quite a strong breeze blowing which made it just about bearable to ride. I didn't get many chances to stop and take pictures on the ride as Wheezpuff had one speed he rode at and that was a lot faster then me 8-;

Also due to the road closures we started the ride lates and had to finish it before it got too hot to ride.

Along the way we came across a desert tortoise, which we relocated off the trail. BCT Trail - Click to Enlarge

I had more success with the helmet cam just after we started riding the loop after I swapped memory cards

As we rode up the trail before another river crossing we could hear what sounded like a heavy machine being fired somewhere nearby.

When we got to the river we could see off to our left two guys with a truck with a 50 Caliber machine mounted on its rear !!, we decided not too hang around and continued on along the trail.

At this point in the ride it was getting really hot way over 100f. And I was starting to really feel the temperature, so I started to stop and take photos just get a breather. BCT Trail - Click to Enlarge

BCT Trail - Click to Enlarge On the last section of trail before the final river crossing I ran out of water having drunk 4.5 liters of water and I was starting to have a sick feeling in my stomach, But luckily for me when I caught up with Wheezpuff at the river he had filtered a load of water which he shared with me. He also got me to go and lie down in the river to cool me down , as I was probably starting to get heat stroke. After getting cool in the river we carried on. BCT Trail - Click to Enlarge

The ride had been pretty tough for my first ride, not so much the trail being tough but the heat was much more than I was used to.

Before I headed back to my Hotel I stopped off at a Sports Chalet in the Happy Valley area and bought more Camalbak Elixir tablets, and a camalbak bottle. Then I went shopping at a Walmart where I bought a cell phone charger as the charger I'd brought with me didn't work in the states, and finally I visited a Target and a Frys to get provisions, before heading back to the Hotel. Dinner - Click to Enlarge At the Hotel I had a swim and used the hot tub, before doing some washing and I eat the food I had bought earlier. And planned my next ride over at Pima & Dynamite. Dirty Socks - Click to Enlarge
