Day 12 : Fruita to Gallup (Phil's World & Sand Canyon - MTB ride's)

Today was a very long day for me, I drove from Fruita to Cortez and then from Cortez to Gallup a total of 354 miles and arrived in Gallup just past midnight. I drove to cortez via Utah which turned out be a big mistake as I got stopped by Highway Patrol coming into Moab for speeding !!!, Next time I'll head south through Colorado. The only other thing that went wrong for me was I forgot to take the cover off my head cam on my 2nd ride of the day, which is a real shame as sand canyon was a fantastic ride.

La quinta Inn Fruita Whilst the La Quinta Inn had been in a handy Location for biking, and the room was nice, It was not in a quiet location there was a truck stop and sewage works at the back of the hotel and a busy gas station and freeway towards the front of the Hotel. I'd probably look for somewhere else to stay next time I stay in this area.
I'd decided to go to Cortez via Utah as that looked like the fasted route according to my GPS. What my GPS didn't take into account was the Utah state patrol , as I was coming down into Moab before Arches park entrance I was pulled over for speeding - first time i've ever been stopped by the police in all my trip to the states 8-(. At least the cop was quite friendly. Busted by Moab cop for speeding

After getting the ticket I kept a closer eye on the speedo, but driving along the long straight roads of the USA is a nightmare when you have to crawl along at 55mph.

I didn't stop in Moab as I'd been therefore and was planning on riding in Cortez on the way to Gallup.

My original plan was to ride at Sand Canyon first and then do Phil's World, But the road from sand canyon on the route I came in on was closed, so I went to Phil's world first. I had drive about 217 miles to get to Phil's World from Fruita.

There weren't many long down hills at Phil's, the trails just rolled along up and down with a few rocky spots. Phils World - Cortez - Mountain Bike Singletrack picture Phils World - Cortez - Mountain Bike Singletrack picture

From the Pinnacle I headed along the Vertebrae trail I went round the Stinky Spring Loop , on to Stone Axe Hill , and then onto the most fun part of the trail the Rib Cage, where the singletrack shoots up and down a series of steep gullies.

From there I continued along DRB ESB and finally Phil's Trail back down to the SUV.

Having ridden most of the trails at Phil's world my cycle computer said I'd Covered 23.41 miles. I packed my bike and drove into Cortez. Where I stopped at Kokopelli Bike and Board and bought a Mountain Bike Map for the area, then got gas at the City Market at around 5pm before heading over to Sand Canyon.

The trail climbed steadily up and you could see indian ruins up on the cliffs. I stopped and got off my bike and had a closer look at some of the ruins. Canyon of the Ancients / Sand Canyon Mountain Bike Singletrack Canyon of the Ancients / Sand Canyon Mountain Bike Singletrack

The trail started off as double track but as I climbed higher the trail got narrower until it you were brushed up against juniper tress as you rode along the singletrack. Canyon of the Ancients / Sand Canyon Mountain Bike Singletrack Canyon of the Ancients / Sand Canyon Mountain Bike Singletrack
Canyon of the Ancients / Sand Canyon Mountain Bike Singletrack I rode over west towards the East and West rock trail away from the sand canyon trail. The trail here seem'd quite wild and remote, and didn't look like it saw a great deal of travel from people. Canyon of the Ancients / Sand Canyon Mountain Bike Singletrack

Canyon of the Ancients / Sand Canyon Mountain Bike Singletrack After riding up into the canyon I came back down to the West Rock trail, and rode up up one side of rock creek and then back down the other. It was quite spooky as the sun started to go down, I had to ride quite fast as I had forgotten to bring my lights out on this ride. The Singletrack was excellent very tight and primitive - a great contrast to the groomed trails over at Phil's World. The only other living thing I saw while riding here was this Cow !! I exited the East rock trail and got onto the West Rock trail, this eventually came to a big area of slick rock - Horses Not recommended - Great 8-) Canyon of the Ancients / Sand Canyon Mountain Bike Singletrack Canyon of the Ancients / Sand Canyon Mountain Bike Singletrack

The drive from Cortez to Gallup was another 137 miles, It was an extremely boring drive in the dark on Super straight roads, even worse because I was sticking to the speed limit after my speeding ticket earlier on in the day. I stopped at a garage and discovered Red Bull Cola - which kept me awake on the Journey to Gallup. I arrived in Gallup at 23:45 and checked into a Hampton Inn & Suites in downtown Gallup.

Hampton Inn - Gallup I had a very nice King Room , But when I went to have a shower I found the water was running out of the Tap dark brown. I rang the front desk but they said there was nothing they could do. As I was very stinky from my days activity's I ended up having a shower in the dodgy water anyway. Before nipping out to a Walmart to get some food. Then I hit the sack. Hampton Inn - Gallup
